I'm tempted to try diptrace as it seems to be well liked by some users. ![]() Also I've yet to find any way of adding holes/slots as well, but it could be I've just not discovered the right way. If you want to put any tracks or extra solder mask on you're out of luck. The most anoying thing I've found so far is the lack of drawing tools for footprints. If you set the visible grid to something reasonably high it really struggles when you pan around. The footprint wizards are helpful to get a starting point (especially for the 144 pin QFP ones I've been making). I never really got on with Eagle, and the limitations put me off learning it properly. I've been using it on and off for a month. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() When will you take the time to deal with the important tasks before they suddenly become urgent?.When will you deal with the tasks that are important, but not urgent?.Instead of focusing on solely the ‘urgent and important’ quadrant of the Eisenhower Matrix, ask yourself these questions to help set the future for your long-term decision-making strategies. But if we don’t get a handle on this fundamental time management issue, it could leave a lot of us wishing we could get things done instead of actually getting them done. It’s a huge challenge to understand the things that take you off your projected course compared to the things that will move the needle. Now that you have written your list, you have an accurate representation of the things you need to work on, and what is most pressing. Label each of the things with a number, one through four (matching the matrix).Make a list of the things you need to do.The biggest payoff comes from actions in the second quadrant. These are the goal-setting and evaluation of business objectives that impact the long-term success of a business, yet, they are rarely classified as urgent.īe a steward of your most precious resource: time. If you’re tackling the matrix for your professional goals, you may start to see that many of your to-dos are in quadrants one and three. Grey = not urgent, not important: Dump this task! Green = urgent, not important: Delegate this task! Yellow = important, but it’s not super urgent: Decide when you need to do it. The perfect color codes to implement can be modeled after those of firefighters. To add a new dimension to your matrix, assign each of the sections in your system a color. It’s best for you to see them in this quadrant so you can work hard at completely eliminating them from your work day. ![]() Simply put, this is the stuff of procrastination - the time-wasters that prevent us from accomplishing the more urgent and important tasks in the first two quadrants. The goal with these tasks is to make an attempt at eliminating and reducing the things that don’t help you do work.įor some, delegation can be an attractive option by offloading work to others so that the calls, emails, and requests can still be handled, freeing you to focus on things that matter in other quadrants.Īctivities that belong in this quadrant are the time-sucking things that don’t contribute any value whatsoever. These types of tasks usually don’t warrant your attention because they don’t produce measurable output. Phone calls, emails, and last-minute meeting requests belong in this quadrant. Items that belong here are important, but they do not require your immediate attention. This is considered a strategic section of the matrix, perfect for long-term development. They are very important deadlines with the highest level of urgency. These are the tasks and to-dos that need immediate attention. How do you decide when you’ll get it done, given all the competition from other items on your to-do list? Use the Eisenhower Matrix to help you figure it out Where you decide your task falls within a specific quadrant dictates where, when, and how long you should take to do that task. Once we clear that hurdle, procrastination melts away, and things start getting done. Today, one of the biggest business challenges (and personal challenges, too), is how we can decide what is urgent and what’s not. Time management solutions are a helpful antidote to days filled with increasingly blurred deadlines, incessant noise, and excessive disruptions. Source: Stephen Covey, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People Most recently, the system has been popularized by Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. His ability to manage his time and tasks was essentially a decision matrix - a framework for deciding what was important and what wasn’t. It’s why the Eisenhower Matrix system exists today. According to legend, the matrix below was attributed to Eisenhower who said, “What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important.” Despite its questionable veracity, there’s not much difficulty in debating Eisenhower’s effectiveness in time management. Even in the darkest hours and most pivotal moments of World War II, Eisenhower was intensely ambitious and steadfastly positive.Īnd like many of our noteworthy luminaries, there remains a certain, almost apocryphal mystique behind how the legendary leader earned his own power-packed productivity tool. ![]() A specific instance cited and demonstrated in the same 20/20 report is the allegation that the phrase “my sweet Satan” can be heard in Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” when it is played backward. The fact that Sammi Curr is conjured through playing a record backward is a response to a real fear of the time. Trick or Treat deals with several related controversies as well, particularly subliminal messaging in music and the targeting of heavy metal and horror by religious interest groups and parent’s organizations like the PTA. The reporter even admits that “none of it has ever been proved” before a fearmongering final discussion with Barbara Walters stating that these issues are “deadly serious.” The events described in the special are dubious at best. He asserts that films like The Exorcist were instrumental in drawing him toward satanism, saying “if the devil has PR, it is cinema.” In the early 90s, Warnke was exposed as a fraud who never had any involvement in any formal or informal satanic activities. The piece cites a number of dubious sources but the most problematic (and applicable to Trick or Treat) is Mike Warnke who claimed to be a former Satanist turned Christian comedian and evangelist. On May 16, 1985, the television news magazine 20/20 aired a special report titled “The Devil Worshippers.” It alleged that satanic ritual sacrifice was running rampant throughout the United States and spends a great deal of time targeting the usual suspects: books like Anton LaVey’s The Satanic Bible, heavy metal albums, specifically those by Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath, and of course horror movies. Ultimately, the committee was unmoved, forcing the music industry to self-regulate, and the ubiquitous “Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics” label was added to thousands of albums in the following years, including Zappa’s entirely instrumental offering “Jazz from Hell.” The film deals with this surreal moment in pop culture history with a clip of Sammi Curr apparently testifying before congress saying, “you cannot legislate morality or music or peoples’ minds.” He then goes on to threaten the committee by saying “we will bring you down,” in a very “stick it to the man” moment in the film. During the hearings, Frank Zappa, John Denver, and Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which was considering legislation involving the music industry, passionately pleading the case against censorship and labeling of music. The group was formed in 1985 by Tipper Gore, wife of then Senator and future Vice President Al Gore, and mostly consisted of Senatorial wives. The Senate hearings on the effects of song lyrics on children involving the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) is a clear target. The film feels like a direct response to several events of the previous few years. What makes Trick or Treat particularly interesting is the cultural context and how it pokes a finger in the eye of several societal trends of the mid-80s. It is an often funny, though not particularly scary horror film, and a fairly impressive directorial debut, especially considering its miniscule budget. “You’ve heard of raising spirits from the dead by incantations, right?” he says, “I did that by playing a record backwards.” And that is pretty much the story of the film. Eddie himself summarizes the plot of the film to his crush Leslie ( Lisa Orgolini) late in the film. ![]() ![]() He is gifted an acetate (studio demo) record of Curr’s final recording by local DJ, Nuke ( Gene Simmons of KISS), who has made a copy and plans to play it over the air at midnight on Halloween.Įddie soon discovers that when he plays the record backward, he gets messages from Sammi Curr, who is eventually conjured by the recording. When his favorite artist, Sammi Curr ( Tony Fields) is burned to death during a hotel fire sparked by a satanic ritual, Eddie is devastated. It is the somewhat Carrie-esque story of the heavy metal obsessed, bullied high school outsider Eddie “Ragman” Weinbaur, played by Marc Price. ![]() The directorial debut of actor Charles Martin Smith, perhaps best known as Terry “The Toad” Fields in American Graffiti, Trick or Treat (aka Ragman) both comments upon and sometimes confirms the fears of the Satanic Panic. One of the best attempts at this was 1986’s Trick or Treat, which also threw in the rising popularity of the Halloween holiday for good measure. In the years to come, The Gate, Black Roses, Slumber Party Massacre II, and other films would all try to capitalize on the satanic stigma attached to horror and heavy metal. ![]() Its favorite targets were horror movies and heavy metal, so naturally, it was only a matter of time before all these factors were exploited to make a buck at the box office. By the mid-80s, the Satanic Panic was in full swing. ![]() ![]() Also, horizontal movement with wet snow would only increase this overlap. Wet snow circular galloping envelopes for the new 400 kV line would overlap if interphase spacers were not used (see Fig. 11) and support using such a circular galloping envelope. For example, galloping studies on bundled conductors with wet snow in Japan showed large horizontal movement (see Fig. Moreover, wet snow galloping occurs over a wider range of wind conditions. Wind tunnel studies on conductors with glaze ice versus wet snow accretions have shown the wet snow profile to be more aerodynamically unstable and that more wind energy transfers to the conductor. The galloping envelope was also changed to be circular. 10: Maximum galloping amplitude versus span length. 9: Lissajous ellipse calculation.įield observation of galloping for glaze ice covered conductors were used here instead of calculations and predicted peak-to-peak galloping amplitudes of 10 m for the new line (see Fig. Lissajous ellipses can be calculated for conductors with glaze ice in relatively flat, open areas (see Fig. ![]() 7: Field observations on conductor galloping motion with glaze ice. A (galloping) envelope around recorded points has an elliptical shape (see Fig. Plotting movement recorded by multiple photos of galloping conductors with glaze ice shows mostly vertical motion (see Fig. These include reporting format as well as instructions for camera and video recording. Knowledge of galloping conductor movement has come mostly from field observation and utility guidelines on how to observe and record galloping events have been developed. Predicting Movement of Conductor Galloping Shape of conductor ice and snow accretion thereby affects conductor galloping movement. Bundled conductors are especially susceptible in this regard since their high torsional strength prevents accreted snow weight from twisting the conductor to reduce the concentration of the accretion into the sharp leading edge. 6) that is highly unstable aerodynamically. However wind-driven wet snow packed onto the windward sides of conductors forms a hard, tenacious deposit with a sharp leading edge (see Fig. Rime ice does not create a conductor shape susceptible to galloping. 5: Glaze ice on conductor.Įlevated sections of the Beauly-Denny route where galloping occurred in the past on the pre-existing 132 kV line have experienced wet snow and rime ice accretions. Thin layers of glaze ice on a conductor have a rounded shape (see Fig. Glaze ice accreted on overhead conductors is more commonly considered in analysis and testing studies of galloping than are other types of accretion. 4: Shapes of ice accretion on conductors (IEEE ESMOL & TP&C meeting tutorial -2008). 3 Weather conditions & type of accretion. The various possible shapes of ice accretion on galloping conductors were reported in a past survey of Canadian utilities (see Fig. Wet snow accretion is observed when air temperature is between 0☌ and 3☌ and can occur under any wind speed. Glaze ice can be precipitated or formed in-cloud when droplet freezing time is sufficiently long to allow a film of water to form on the accreting surface. Rime ice is in-cloud icing where super-cooled droplets impact and then freeze onto a substrate. The types of ice and snow that can accrete on overhead conductors are rime ice, glaze ice, frost, dry snow and wet snow (see Fig. Driving wind can vary between 8 to 72 km/h (5 to 45 mph) at a 10 to 90 degree angle to the line and can be unsteady in velocity or direction. Amplitudes are mainly vertical and typically range from +0.1 to 1.0 times the sag of the span while frequencies usually range from 0.15 to 1.0 Hz. In most cases, there is an ice accretion on the conductor that modifies its normal cross-sectional shape such that it becomes aerodynamically unstable. ![]() Galloping is large amplitude, low frequency, wind-induced oscillation of overhead lines. Composite type interphase spacers had already been installed on the 132 kV line to mitigate galloping under these severe weather conditions. The line, running from Beauly Substation to Denny North Substation in Scotland, follows a similar route to an existing 132 kV line and traverses some 220 km of hilly terrain exposed to high winds with wet snow accumulations on conductors during freezing of from 75 to 100 mm diameter.
